The technology for making gel ball pen has been invented since 1930s. After more than 70 years of innovation, this kind of technology has been matured and made its way to most of the pen-making factories.
At the same time, through the gel ball pen has developed for more than a decade, there are still many difficulties to be settled in materials, manufacturing process and principle of work. So, only the more powerful research & development capability and quality control competence can insure the stable quality of the pen, which is not easy for each pen-making manufacturer.
The difficulty of Nib Making:
(1) There are two processes to make nib – forming at many times & forming at one time in many positions.
(2) Because the low cost, most manufacturers adopts the process “forming at many times” to make nib. For “forming at many times”, because each nib has to be formed through many processes, and the machine can easily makes error, the quality of the nibs can not be guaranteed and the ball-dropping, ink leakage and back-flow of ink easily occur.
(3) Even though the precision instrument with 24 positions and the ability of forming at on time is adopted, the quality of the nibs is still unsatisfied. So, there are 2 key factors that influence the quality of nib during the nib making:

More precise the instrument is, the higher requirements are presented to users. The most experienced user can precisely set the data of the machine to minimum the error. What's more, the strict quality test procedure is also necessary for the quality precision. No matter how precise the machine is, the 100% acceptance cannot be possibly acquired, so the efficiency of the quality control system can finally determine the quality of the finished products.
The precision of the cutting and grinding the nib relies on the tools of the precise instrument,and the quality of the hard alloy can directly affect the performance of the cutting and grinding operations.
The Difficulties of Ink-making
Ink can be divided into two types – the pigment ink and the dye-based ink.
The difficulty and cost of making dye-base ink are comparatively low, but this kind of ink discolors easily. While the pigment ink is waterproof, lightproof and fadeless, so it is the best choice when making the high quality gel ball pen. But there is a shortcoming for the pigment ink – the particle that is contained inside the ink and cannot be grinded easily, finally becomes the agglomeration to make writing impossible.
So, how to grind the particle as possible as you can and make it to be separated instead of agglomerated is a big problem. But fortunately, after the studies of so many years, this problem has been settled basically. Even so, the strictest process procedure and the quality control system are still needed to eliminate this problem.

The Difficulties of the matches of ink and nib
When the ball at the front of the pen tip rolls continually, the letters are printed in the paper. So the matches of ink and nib are the key factor for fluent and smooth writing. Because there are many specifications for the size of the pen tip, how to correctly math ink with different kinds of pen tip is a big problem.
So far, only through strict test and process control, the ink and different kinds of pen tips can be matched with high level to insure the smooth and fluent writing.

(1) Strict Spot Test
M&G adopts the precise projection method to spot test each batch of nib - the nib is placed under the projection of high resolution to determine whether the ink can smoothly flow through nib or not by pressing the pen ball for several times. The principle of this method is that if the ball is oversized, the ink is blocked by the ball and cannot flow to the paper smoothly, if the ball is too small, the ink will leak from the pen to dirty the paper and the ball is easy to drop. Actually, because these errors are very subtle, only the most experienced checker can find out. For each batch of ink, M&G also has the strict spot test technology to assure the user with high quality before the product is put into production.
(2) Rigid Quality Control
Each gel ball pen is made from many elements assembled together. Each assembling operation and each assembling step are strictly standardized. For example, any vibration must be eliminated before the pen core is capped and sealed. If the operation of hand is wrong, the consequent vibration can possibly make the ink refluent.
